After I referenced all the files for the slideshow control images with full url (https:// ... ) in the css, I found that those images would display, even when I clicked on "No" in the dreaded security alert window (before they wouldn't show, but the whole thing worked anyway) ... but that didn't stop the alert window popping up - aaaaaaaaargh ...
